Business Development and Partnership Office

Partnerships

Glenn is actively involved in developing strategic alliances and partnerships which will support the continued development of current technologies. We will work with these partners to jointly pursue collaborative funding at the national, state and local levels, and with industry.

The Business Development and Partnership Office is committed to working with our partners to define viable and mutually agreed upon business opportunities.

Energy Related Partnerships

  • North East Ohio Partnership – Formed a partnership with regional groups to support the continuous development of Cleveland in the engineering and technologies of the future. We have jointly developed a proposal process that we all will use to pursue collaborative funding at the national, state and local levels. The Chief Executives of these organizations will meet quarterly to define overall strategic directions and review progress of on-going activities.
    • Greater Cleveland Partnership
    • NorTech
    • Ohio Aerospace Institute
    • Team NEO
  • Great Lakes Energy Task Force Visionary leaders from Cleveland businesses, local and state governments
  • University Clean Energy Alliance of Ohio – (UCEAO) -

Map of the University Members in Ohio of UCEAO

UCEAO, a network of fifteen universities, has as its mission statement  "sharing expertise in the areas of clean energy generation through traditional and alternative means and to help inform energy policy decisions using the best science available.

A single collective message from an alliance of our great universities, concerning the critical importance of clean and secure energy to the state and the nation, is needed at this time in history".

NASA Glenn Research Center and Air Force Research Laboratory are government laboratory affiliated (non-voting) members of this alliance.

NBPO and UCEAO will work together to define topics of common interest on a long-term strategic and sustainable basis, and mutually develop proposals in response to periodic local, state, and national funding opportunities for advanced energy technologies.

GRC works closely with the Great Lakes Energy Task Force and with several Department of Energy Laboratories, such as Oak Ridge National Laboratory, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, and others as appropriate. NBPO currently has umbrella "agreements" with eleven universities in Ohio.

Umbrella ‘agreements are also in development with various selected organizations, such as, Arnold Engineering Development Center, Gulfstream, Lockheed-Martin Aeronautics, Siemens Power Generation, EIG Renewables and Williams International. Umbrella "agreements" will continue to be developed to expand alliances to other companies. Please contact us if you are interested in learning more about these partnerships or interested in forming new collaborative alliances with NASA Glenn.

Human Health Related Partnerships

There are several human health-related partnerships currently in existence or in development. These partnerships take advantage of unique capabilities and facilities and create synergistic relations to jointly target human health research and technology development opportunities in a well orchestrated and unified manner. A few of the successful strategic partnerships include the following:

John Glenn Biomedical Engineering Consortium

John Glenn Biomedical Engineering Consortium includes membership from GRC, Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Cleveland Clinic Foundation, University Hospitals of Cleveland, and the National Center for Space Exploration Research (NCSER). The Consortium performs interdisciplinary research which leverages GRC expertise in fluid physics and sensor technology to mitigate critical risks to crew health, safety and performance.

Cleveland Clinic Center for Space Medicine

Cleveland Clinic Center for Space Medicine is a collaboration to provide an environment and mechanism to promote interdisciplinary research that will exploit the unique skills, capabilities, and facilities of both Cleveland Clinic and GRC in support of long duration spaceflight.

BioEnterprise

BioEnterprise is working collaboratively with GRC to further the development and commercialization of life science-related technologies in Northeast Ohio. This collaboration allows GRC access to BioEnterprise clients whose technologies may be beneficial to NASA’s mission. These partnerships noted above will continue to be used to establish more Human Health reimbursable activities in the future. However, the major focus over the next 5 years will to develop new strategic partnerships in three key areas:

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base’s New 711th Human Performance Wing (Dayton, OH)

As part of the formal plan to implement a Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, the Air Force Institute of Operational Health, the Performance Enhancement Directorate and the AFRL/Human Effectiveness (HE) will merge to form the 711th Human Performance Wing (HPW), which will exist under the AFRL commander at Wright-Patterson. The establishment of the 711th HPW will bring a net increase of around 1000 personnel and a total HPW funding level of $300M per year. In collaboration with the surrounding schools and universities and medical institutions, the 711th HPW will function as a center of excellence for aerospace medicine.

NASA GRC has successfully worked with AFRL/HE in the past and preliminary discussions are in progress to consider putting in place a NASA GRC-AFRL Memorandum of Understanding in the area of human performance. Also, continued active participation with the Dayton Development Coalition’s Medical Task Force will ensure GRC’s awareness of opportunities as the 711th HPW matures and establishes partnerships and relationships with it surrounding community.

Ohio University Alliances

Most of the human health federal funding available for competition is available though the National Institute of Health (NIH) with some from the National Science Foundation (NSF). With both these agencies NASA is not allowed to be the prime in responding to a solicitation or allowed to be compensated for use of civil servant time as part of a proposal award. A means to work together is to partner with universities whose students or faculty can work in partnership with GRC and be allowed access to utilize unique GRC resources. GRC is working to establish strategic alliances with the universities in the State of Ohio.

GRC believes if properly planned and executed, these alliances can benefit all parties from both a research and an education perspective. GRC is pursuing establishing 14 Memorandums of Understandings (MOUs) in the State of Ohio in enabling future partnership activities to mature in the area of human health.

Local Hospitals and Industry

Building on the successes of past partnerships with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (CCF) we will be establishing an umbrella agreement with them to enable GRC to further work together in a broader range of areas. These areas include, but are not limited, to such activities associated with newly established Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center (GCIC) or perhaps through joint proposal awards through NIH or the State of Ohio 3rd Frontier Project. CCF is number one in the nation in cardiovascular research and care and number one in the Midwest in urology.

Other hospitals such as University Hospitals will also be engaged as opportunities present themselves. GRC has successfully worked with the bio-medical industry as well to continue to identify and support opportunities as they arise. GRC is a participant in the Northeast Ohio Partnership which includes membership from GRC, Ohio Aerospace Institute, Nortech, and Team Northeast Ohio (TeamNEO).

GRC already has in place a proposal process that will be used to pursue collaborative funding at the national, state and local levels. The Chief Executives of all of these organizations will meet quarterly to define overall strategic directions and review progress of on-going activities. Future collaborations with hospitals and industry may be identified from this strategic partnership.

Homeland Security Related Partnerships

NASA GRC, OAI, and the City of Cleveland have developed a partnership to support the needs of City of Cleveland in the area of Homeland Defense.
