The University Affairs Program Office is able to offer a wide variety of potential placements for faculty and students of higher education at NASA Glenn Research Center. Collaborative faculty and student support is provided through the following programs:
NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP)
The NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP) awards fellowships for graduate study leading to masters or doctoral degrees in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering related to NASA research and development. This twelve month award may include a required internship at the NASA Center affiliated with the NASA sponsored research.
NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program (USRP)
The NASA Undergraduate Student Research Project, or USRP, offers internship opportunities for undergraduate science and engineering students at all 10 NASA centers and additional partner facilities. These mentor-guided internships provide hands-on, real-life, career-related experiences that challenge, inspire, and provide practical application that complements and expands upon students’ academic education.
Three internship sessions are offered: a 15-week spring session, a 10-week summer session and a 15-week autumn session. Eligible applicants must be classified as sophomores, juniors or seniors by the start of their internship. The students must be U.S. citizens with academic majors or course concentration in engineering, mathematics, computer science, or physical and life sciences.
NASA Experimental Program to Simulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR):
Contact Dr. M. David Kankam (below) for Glenn Research Center interface with EPSCoR. The NASA Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) provides States of modest research infrastructure with funding to develop a more competitive research base within their State and member academic institutions. A total of seven Federal agencies conduct EPSCoR programs.
Faculty Awards for Research (FAR)
Currently on hold by NASA HQ Office of Education. The primary strategy for implementing the FAR Awards for research is through a competitive peer review and merit selection process in collaboration with the Strategic Enterprises, NASA Installations and JPL.
NASA Academy
A national educational, training, and research resource for college undergraduate and graduate students, dedicated to promoting current and future opportunities for innovation and leadership in aerospace-related careers.
NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP)
The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly talented national and international individuals to engage in ongoing NASA research programs at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA-affiliated research institution. These one- to three-year Fellowship appointments are competitive and are designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.
Application for NASA Postdoctoral Program
NASA Glenn Cooperative Education Program
The Glenn Cooperative (Co-Op) Education Program combines a student’s academic study with a paid career-related work experience. Cooperative education provides students with a better understanding of human relations and offers practical experience that relates academic studies to work. The NASA Glenn Cooperative Education Program consists of a series of planned work assignments combined with alternative periods of academic study in the science, engineering, professional administration, and trades fields. Student Trainees will work under the guidance of qualified personnel performing duties directly related to the field for which they are being trained. While successful completion of the program and graduation from college are prerequisites for appointment to a career position, they do not necessarily guarantee such an appointment.
NASA Science and Technology Scholarship Program (STSP)
NASA is currently developing the Science and Technology Scholarship Program. This scholarship-for-service program will provide both scholarship and internship opportunities to undergraduate students pursuing degrees in engineering, mathematics, computer science and physical/life sciences. This competitive program seeks students who excel in science, technology, engineering or mathematics to compete for a full scholarship of up to $20,000 per year – in exchange for a commitment to work full-time at a NASA center or one of its affiliates upon graduation. Additional stipend support of up to $10,000 per year will be provided to support a required internship or research experience at a NASA center or affiliate. The formal announcement of this program has been postponed to better align capabilities and workforce needs to the Vision for Space Exploration, and to NASA’s science and aeronautics research.
NASA Glenn Faculty Fellowship Program (NGFFP)
Ten week fellowships for science and engineering faculty are available at NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio during the summer months. Please click on link to discover more details
NASA Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD) Student Internship & Faculty Fellowship Programs
The purpose of the ESMD Higher Education Grants is to train and develop the highly skilled scientific, engineering, and technical workforce of the future needed to implement the Vision for Space Exploration.

National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program
NASA initiated the National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program, also known as Space Grant, in 1989. Space Grant is a national network of colleges and universities. These institutions are working to expand opportunities for Americans to understand and participate in NASA’s aeronautics and space projects by supporting and enhancing science and engineering education, research and public outreach efforts. The Space Grant national network includes over 850 affiliates from universities, colleges, industry, museums, science centers, and state and local agencies. These affiliates belong to one of 52 consortia in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
